JB, The pay plan is pretty much standard. The problem is, too many salesman for the amount of cars sold per month and the size of the dealership.

Hi Darnelle,

That is the thing about selling cars for a living is that there are no guarantees. You are the only one that controls your destiny and level of success.
If you going to do it you need to jump in with both feet and make it happen. There is great money in being a car salesman, but you had to make it work.

HI, I’ve been reading the posts and comments here and I’m intrigued. There is a job fair on Monday for car salesman. They offer 6k for training (which is a little unsettling). I’ve always been interested in the industry, but always have been reluctant because of commission and making enough money to support a family of 3. I’ve had previous jobs doing tech support, recently, and working in service restaurant industry. I guess my question is: Does a black guy with dreds fit into the category of a car salesman that makes 6 figures? Putting it bluntly… I know there are people here with experience and I want an honest opinion. Would I have to cut my hair? Personally, I am definitely willing to put in the time and effort, and I don’t have a problem following strict guidelines. But how can I reassure my significant other and myself that this would be a great opportunity for us? Thanks for suggestions and comments.

As a Newbie I sold a car on my first day with a $3,000 gross.
Never sold cars before. My advice; Put in the hours, Look Sharp, Know your inventory, Listen to your manager and follow the process.

I’m glad I found this website. I have an interview tomorrow at a car dealership. I’d never considered a sales career of any kind let alone auto sales. I left my resume at this dealership about 6 months ago after reading their newspaper ad for clerical help. Upon arriving at the dealership I went into the showroom where I stood for several minutes without seeing anyone. So I placed my resume on the nearest desk and left. About a month ago I started a job that I hate and I’ve been praying to find something else. Today, out of the blue, I get a call from this dealership inviting me to come interview for a sales position. My first reaction was a slight giggle but after thinking about it for a bit I agreed to meet with him to see what he has to say. We’ll see where it goes. I am female by the way and quite frankly, the idea of working on comission scares me. But If I do end up selling cars I think I will find your sight helpful. Any advice regarding the interview would be welcome.

Hi Barry,

I am not sure what chain reaction is, but I appreciate your input.

You owe it to yourself is a good one and it still works today.

KB I’m very new to the car salesman industry, I just got hired by a Chevrolet/Kia Dealership. I’m going into this blind I want to make more money. I’m 28 years old, I have military experience, but never sales exp. I have been working there a couple weeks I’m just starting to take ups now, learning all the product knowledge is a big thing, my commission plan is $150 mini, 30% New (no pack) 25% Used with $750 Pack 10 vehicles sold $300 + $300 for each additional 2 vehicles sold is this a good plan. The dealership is small maybe move around 50-100 cars a month only about 10 salesman any advice for me.

Hi Martin,

The leads from online databases are usually not very good leads. In fact the closing ratio is very low. The best source of leads are past customers of the dealership. If you have not been there very long ask your manager about orphan customers.

Martin Sharpe · January 2 at 10:23 pm

I have some prior car sales experience and was just wandering how some sales associates have three to more leads visiting the dealership with their name on a daily basis. Could it be that they are actually purchasing those leads from unline data bases. If not I will like to know, could you tell me.

This is really interesting. This is one of the reasons that I love surfing. You’ll never know what you’ll find.

I am looking forward to your advise. I work in the internet dept of a Honda Store in Arkansas and I need help. Phone skills, emails, to get emotion going into the customer. Compared to NJ most people dont care and arent into cars emotionaly anymore. Thank you for this site.
