Embarking on a car salesman career is much more than simply landing a job selling automobiles. One of the first things that people question about a car salesman career is the car salesman salary. Everyone always asks what is the average income of the automobile salesperson as a gauge to whether they want to pursue the job and eventually a career. Average is very hard to state because of the turnover and the nature of the business, but I will tell that you can expect anywhere from $40,000 a year to $250,000 and year. There are many variables that include commission, bonuses, dealership and skill level. Obviously $250,000 a year is somewhat rare, but a six-figure car salesman income is not uncommon.

Car dealerships compensate their salesmen in a variety of ways that may or may not include commission, weekly salary,  $x dollars per sold car, bonuses, spiffs or a combination of all of the above. However the most common method for car salesman to earn their keep is straight commission. The thought of being paid on a commission basis is what keeps many people from pursuing a car salesman career. To get right to the point of explaining commission is “No sales = No pay”. The individual tasks and obligations are spelled out for everyone and they include a variety of routines, but first and foremost is the selling of automobiles. The car salesman will greet customers; help them select the appropriate vehicle to satisfy their wants and needs that fits their budget. They will take customers for test-drives and demonstrate the features and benefits of prospective vehicles. The car salesman then negotiates price and terms until an agreement is made or informs the salesman manager if they are unable to close the sale. They are also responsible for overcoming objections, filling out paper work, following up with both sold and customers that left the dealership without buying a car. They may be responsible for delivering the car and orienting the buyer on the care and operation of their new vehicle.

The car salesman will also be expected to attend car salesman training classes and manufacturer hosted training events that will provide car salesman tips and techniques to further their car salesman career and increase their sales results. They will help move inventory around the dealership and follow the directives of the sales manager. However every automobile dealership is different and each one is a small business that operates a bit differently than the next. Some dealerships prefer to only hire people that are new to the car business and some dealerships only hire experienced sales people. Once you have achieved some levels of success and confidence you go practically anywhere and land a car salesman job because most car dealers will hire salesmen with a proven track record. When people start their car salesman career they rarely consider the opportunities that are naturally inherent to the profession. The car salesman career path can be very fruitful and diverse. Many critics talk about the high turnover rate in the profession, but they rarely see the big picture. A car salesman career has many avenues available for the right person that includes sales management, used car manager and finance. There are many more that are available outside the dealership as well. Many auto industry suppliers will hire the successful car salesman to work for their company to sell the their products and services to dealerships. Some can be very lucrative and others can be similar to selling cars, but in a different environment.

A car salesman career is obviously not for everyone, but the job of car salesman a good job. The career path has a whole host of options for the person that is willing to make commitment. From money to advancement and the ability to control your income is one of the best things about selling cars for a living.
