Which is the right car dealership for you? Is it about the brand, the location, the people, management or all of the above? Every dealership has its own chemistry of people, management, practices and numerous other things that make that dealership. That chemistry makes every dealership different, it can be great for some people but terrible for others. Sure selling cars is selling cars, but every car dealership has a different pay plan, bonus plan, commission rate, management style, sales process or lack of and what about pricing, accessories and financing. Therefore working at one dealership is rarely just like the other.
Everybody is different and everyone will perform differently at a different dealership. I have seen more than one top car salesman at one dealership become average at another dealership. Plus I have seen average salespeople become top sellers when they leave and sell at other dealerships. The point here is that you need to be selling at the right dealership for you in order to become a top performer. If you enjoy selling cars, but things aren’t clicking for you at your current dealership maybe you need to work for a different dealership. Maybe it’s the environment, people, management, but whatever it is you should think abut changing stores.
I don’t want to hear any whining about I don’t like this or that, but I am talking about personal values and morals. If you can’t sell cars, you can’t sell cars and no matter how many dealerships you work at you still won’t sell cars. When you put the time and the effort and feel like you are just not increasing your sales and/or income you might need to step back and look at the big picture. Is the dealership holding you back or are you holding yourself back? You need to be honest with yourself and be willing to face the facts, is there a right dealership for you.
Is There a Right Car Dealership?
I am not writing this post to encourage any of you car salesmen or car saleswomen to jump from dealership to dealership because you want to sell more cars. I want you to realize that selling cars can be very different from one dealership to the other. Of course we are still selling cars, but when you have cultural, moral, financial and other kinds issues it can be very difficult to be a top performer. Don’t bad mouth the profession just because you didn’t sell cars for the right car dealership.
Things are always changing and it happens at car dealerships too, management, staff, policies, etc. The way things are done; staff comes and goes, promotions and any number of things can change the selling environment. I have seen many dealerships change over the years and this is one of the reasons that the turnover ratio in our profession is higher than most professions. As car sales professionals we know how to read our customers, tailor our presentations and change accordingly to make a sale. You need to do the same thing when it comes to deciding if you are working for the right car dealership and do what needs to be done.
