The average customer that walks into your showroom only visits a car dealership every few years and a buying a car can be a very big financial decision for that customer. One of the most common mistakes that sales people make is to overwhelm their customer with their car salesman information. Obviously every customer is different, but having to digest all the choices and options that are available to them can cause them to back off. Provide them with too many facts, choices and material and they might start thinking that they need to take all this new found knowledge and go home and think about their purchase.

Just because you have done a great job of learning all of this product knowledge doesn’t mean you have to use it on every customer. I have seen many a salesman take a customer that was ready to buy an automobile and turn them into a be back in no time. They have either provided so much car salesman information that they started to question their purchase or they have bored them to death with details that they care nothing about until they ask for your business card.

You are not going to get paid a car sales commission for providing information. Sometimes in an effort to sell a vehicle we get caught up in trying to give them all the information and they get overwhelmed. Pay close attention to your buyer. Use the information that you gathered and focus on providing the information that supports their concerns and interests. Not every customer is interested in a detailed explanation of vehicle stability control or how a baby seat gets secured in the vehicle.

Filter the car salesman information you provide by tailoring your test drive, demonstration and walk around to your customer. A Use their wants and needs to help you sell the car by putting them in a positive light. You don’t need to show them every option or every single configuration that is available. You only need to educate them on what is going to reinforce their decision to buy a new automobile.

They have already thought about buying a car before they came to your lot and they probably have a good idea how much they can spend. They say that nearly 90% of the buyers have spent some time on the Internet looking at cars and prices before they step foot in a dealership. You stand a much better chance of making a sale when you follow their lead and listen closely for their Hot Buttons.

Everybody would like to have leather seats; navigation and a top of the line sound system, but when it comes time to work out the numbers and close the sale you are going to have to scrape them off the ceiling. Don’t talk to them about the V-6 when the 4 cylinder will be fine, don’t talk about a sunroof when they have no use for one and don’t test drive the Limited model when the base model is what they were thinking about. The price and/or payments are going to kill the deal.

Stop giving them too much car salesman information when it doesn’t support what they need to make the decision to buy a car. As we know from our car sales training product knowledge is important, but too much can send them back home to think about their purchase rather than drive it home NOW!

Others do and so can you!

Practically every car dealer that I know of has some kind of in house car sales training. This sales training could be any number of different systems, but they are all designed to do the same thing, start your car sales career, sell cars and make money. I have heard of 7 steps to a sale, 9 steps to sold, 10 points to sale and 12 parts to closed, whatever your dealership has adopted to their store it is important to get yourself familiar with the sales system. No matter how many points or parts there are, the system has been selling cars for the dealer or they wouldn’t be there today.

I am not familiar with every car sales training program that is in use today, but all of the ones that have I seen have been good. They are basically all the same, they usually combine the steps into less or expand them into more steps of the car sale. I am in favor of any system that sells cars and adds to your car salesman income. My point of this post is to urge you to learn the system thoroughly and put it to good use.

Car Salesman Training and the Newbie

I have seen many sales people start a career in car sales and start selling cars by following the car sales training system to the letter and the car sales script. Then after a short time they start getting a big head and think they are hot stuff. So then they start skipping steps and short cutting the system. They start thinking that they know better than the system that was designed by an auto sales professional. This professional sales trainer has been in the car business for years and has tested and retested the system before putting it into use at a car dealer.

Then the Newbie that started skipping steps is seeing their sales dropping off and they are wondering why. The why is their short cutting of the car sales training system. I have seen this happen to newer sales people more times than I can remember. Some of them realize what they are doing, so they go back to the basics and start selling cars again. Some of them just keep trying to sell cars without going back to the system or don’t listen to people that tell them to go back to the basics and they eventually starve themselves out of a car sales career.

Tweaking the Car Sales Training

I am not advocating that anyone should deviate from the automotive sales training system that you car dealership requires you to use to sell cars, but there is always a little room for some tweaking. By tweaking I mean adding some personality. If you are going to hit that six figure income selling cars you need to be able to adjust the system slightly to be able to build rapport with more different kinds of car buyers. Learn some of the car sales techniques that your fellow sales people use and start using them yourself.

The more car buyers that you can build rapport with, the more cars you will sell. If your car sales training has car sales scripts, adjust those scripts slightly so you do not sound like a robot or parrot. Get to know your lines and scripts so that you can deliver them with a twist so that it sounds like it is coming from you rather than a canned script. Depending on your customer tailor your lines, questions and word tracks so they sound like they are your natural way of talking. The more natural your conversation sounds, the more comfortable your car buyer will be. Remember, people buy from people. if they feel comfortable they are much more likely to buy from you, bringing you closer to that six figure car salesman income. With time and experience you will also develop your own car sales techniques for selling cars, that’s part of being a car salesman. How to be a good car salesman or car sales woman means the more you can adapt to your customer, the more you can earn as a successful car salesman.

Have your considered being a car salesman? There are a lot of misconceptions, lies, opinions and rumors about being a car salesman, but the negatives ones that I have heard and tracked down usually come from people that could not live on their car salesman income. This is not very unusual because there are many people that enter and leave a career in car sales every year.

I have sold cars to many people that would tell me that they sold cars before and when I ask them more about their car sales career I find out that they had a hard time making a consistent income. I am not talking about these people, stories and rumors to scare anyone from being a car salesman or car saleswoman. In fact I am a big fan of a career in car sales. I think it is one of the best ways to make a six figure income and have some fun at the same time.

Being A Car Salesman or Car Sales Woman – You Can Too!

Many people could sell cars for a living and do quite well if they understood the car business better and that is one of the reasons our blog Car Sales Professional. Many people think that in being a car salesman means that you need to have the “Gift of Gab” or to be a very social and talkative person. That is not the case when it comes to selling cars. In many cases new sales people that talk too much will very often talk themselves out of a sale before they knew what happened. Talking is a very small part of the overall communication between the car salesman and the customer.

Being a car salesman does not require any specialized skills, it just requires you to have an open mind and be willing to learn the car business. Any car dealership that you sell for will have a car sales training system that they use because it works for them. Follow their car sales training system, pay close attention to everything, watch the top sales people and read our car salesman tips.

Being a Car Salesman is Not for Everyone

You will find that car sales career is not for just anybody, it takes a certain type of person to be a successful car salesman. One thing that scares most people away from being a car salesman is way that the sales person gets compensated. To many people the idea of getting paid a commission for their sales results is just too scary for them. They want to know exactly what they are getting paid each week. Sure it would be nice to receive a fixed amount each week or month, but if worked a little harder and closed an extra sales or two every month you might be able to to earn an extra $1000 or more each month.

Being a car salesman gives you the ability to control the amount car salesman income you receive and that is my favorite part. Working a little harder as an automobile salesman doesn’t require much, maybe a couple more phone calls or a couple more ups each week and you have the potential to earn an extra couple of thousand dollars that month. I said work a little harder, but it is really about working smarter. As a car sales person you use your words, your pen and your head to make more money, there isn’t any physical labor involved. I love the car business for the ability to make as much money as you want and the varied automobile sales careers. You can give yourself a raise with very little effort, that alone is reason enough to become a car salesman.

Being a Car Salesman is a Great Career

You will notice that the top sales people and the bottom sales people use the same system, the difference is the sales person. Being a car salesman or car sales woman or should I say the top salesman requires a positive attitude, a desire to succeed and going the extra mile by learning all you can learn about selling cars. Don’t forget to implement the Car Salesman Tips on the blog and take more ups.
