Car Saleswoman Marketing

How often do you run into a car sales woman? Not too often it’s sad to say.

The field of selling cars for a living has been dominated by men since the beginning of car sales and it’s time for a change. I know many women in the business and they make great car saleswomen, F & I Managers, Sales Managers and yes, even General Managers. Maybe it’s the stigma that goes along with being a car salesman the holds back some women from entering a career in car sales or maybe it’s common misconception that men make better car sales people. Whatever it is it’s time to cast aside those old beliefs from the past and get some women selling cars and other automobile sales careers.

You Should Be a Car Sales Woman

It is said that women are responsible for making many more car buying decisions than men, so wouldn’t it make sense to have more women selling cars. I have run into female car buyers before that only want to work with a car sales woman because they feel more comfortable talking to and dealing with another woman. Think about that for a second, if a woman has the courage to say she only wants to work with a woman car sales person there must be many more that would never say it, but would also like to be taken care of by a car saleswoman.

Why a Car Saleswoman – Women Selling Cars

To be a professional car salesman or car saleswoman and make a six figure income there are many skills and talents that are needed. One of these talents is to get your car buyer to open up to you and talk. You need to find their reasons and true motivation for buying a car and you won’t be able to do that if you can’t get them to open up to you. You also need to make your customer feel comfortable making a big purchase and we all know that if they don’t feel comfortable they won’t pull the trigger. A good car saleswoman may even have advantage in this area because the car buying public does not see the woman car sales person as a threat as much as they do men. They are more prone to talk and open up to a women selling cars than they are to a car salesman. Once you can get them to open up and start talking they will tell you how to sell them a car.

Don’t get me wrong here a good car salesman can get close to a customer, but a good car sales woman may have a slight advantage. We all know that being a successful car salesman or car saleswoman is not for everyone and it takes much more than being male or female. However, I believe that skill and experience levels being equal women selling cars may have a slight advantage when it comes to selling automobiles and prospecting. Don’t get mad at me guys, I am just calling it like it see it.

Professional women car salesmanI always use the term car salesman throughout this blog and if you read the book about selling cars, but I want you ladies to know that even though this is not considered a car saleswoman blog you should think of it as one. Women can have a great career in sales as a car sales woman if you are willing to jump in and start selling some cars. Get the Car Salesman guide for women selling cars to learn car sales techniques and car sales tips so you too can earn a six figure income selling cars too!

I am a car sales woman doing 15 cars a month in the slow months- in a small dealership. Love selling and working with folks. I am a student of the greats. I train on my own and work every day.

All my managers are men. I want to start desking deals, driving trades, and help my staff close deals.

Any suggestions how I can prepare and make this move to the next level now, today?

Thank you.

Hi A.Lynn

Great job and congrats.

I hope you can work something out with your dealership, that is the only thing I can think of at this point.

Best of Luck

I have been in the car business for 4 years. The first 3 1/2 doing floor and Internet Sales. My clients love me since I am not pushy and follow the steps to the sale while making them comfortable, in comparison to most men.I was moved into a Business Development Management position for 6 months, But recently have been put back to the Sales department, so conviently around the time of finding out that I am expecting my third child and I am lucky enough to have a clientel that allows me to work a more family oriented schedule. But I am worried about being pregnant and still maintaining my income. Any suggestions?

Hi,

I really want to become a sales women. I’m 25 years old, a two -year old son. I want to start in a year or two at a dealership. What dealerships would except me for starting out? I work part-time at a sales company right now, and have plenty of experience. I just need to find the right dealership that would start me out.

Thank you in advance.

Hi Michelle,

You should do well with Toyota.

As far as a flex schedule I have never heard of that type of arrangement, but that really depends on the dealership.

I am currently in the training process for a Toyota dealership. I know I am going to kill at this job, and I wasted 4 years on an environmental science degree. My only concern is the hours. I am 29, divorced, with a 4 year old in preschool. We have shared custody so I have her bi-weekly. Any thoughts on having a flex schedule?

Hi,

I was just hired as a saleswoman for a Toyota dealership. I am very excited but also a little afraid of not producing. The dealership does well and meet their monthly goals each month. I believe I will get outside traffic, but my goal is to bring traffic in and to do this by thinking outside the box. I am thinking about contacting car rental companies and car auction companies, and companies such as pharmacetical companies that give their employees company cars to drive. Do you have any suggestions other than family and friends on how to bring business into the dealership? Thank you

Hi Michelle,

It’s nice to hear from a successful car sales woman.

Excellent, I love to hear about the success of women in the car business.

Michelle · June 23 at 10:58 am

As a twentysomething woman that’s been in the car business for nearly 7 years, I agree completely with this posting.

Don’t get me wrong, I’ve encountered a few ‘good ol’ boy’ type sales managers who had trouble accepting that a woman could hold her own against his top salespeople. What happened? Well let’s just say those individuals never last, and certainly not due to me; they hurt themselves.

All this has done is teach me to be even more thick skinned.

I take pride that not only have I survived the animosity, I’ve thrived.

It makes my wee little car heart happy to now be training a fresh batch of strong, outgoing saleswomen…as their manager.

Hi Kratia,

With your experience in a BDC department you have a definite advantage.
You have a pretty good idea of how the car business works the and income potential.
Especially if you are the only woman, which could be a real advantage.
What are you waiting for?

Lets Go

Kratia · April 14 at 11:16 am

Hi Everyone,
I am 27 Years old and have been working in the BDC department for dealerships since 2004. Recently, the Toyota dealership that I work at changed our bonus program and it is just not enough to survive. I have three small children and a soon to be hubby at home. His work goes off and on in which he is on call alot, so I feel the need to pick up where he slacks. I have been told for years that I should do sales, but have been too afraid because I don’t know product knowledge. I know from the bottom of my heart that I have got what it takes to sell cars. I’m outgoing and aggressive at the same time. I’m just sfraid of failing at it being the only woman at the dealership? Why I do not know.

KB · March 18 at 5:48 pm

Hi Julie,

If you are new to the business I would stick to the brand that get more traffic until you have experience. Toyota, Hyundai, Honda and Nissan are good choices.

Toyota attracts a large percentage of women buyers.

Best of Luck

Hi, I am looking to enter into the car sales arena. Am recently divorced and the kids are grown and gone. I would love any and all suggestions on getting my foot in the door. As a women I will always go the the women at business, even all my doctors are female. Any suggestions as to the type of dealership that us women are more likely to be successful at? Are high-end foreign sales easier for women or lower-end American made cars? Julie

KB · February 14 at 7:12 pm

Hi Joli,

I am not a fan of dealers that require their salespeople to pay for training, but I know several people that have done that and are making a good living. It is true that the practice is to keep out the undesirables, but there are no guarantees that everyone will pass the class.

Go with your gut feeling.
Remember, two people meet and one gets sold.

Just interviewed with a Chrysler dealer in NJ who is looking to train 15 new salespeople. the contracted trainer buttered me up and said women make a lot more than men and said I could trip over $40-50k. Average is 60-70k. top earners make 150-200.

I am suspicious because he said I had to buy my own training materials and that it isnt expensive. The owner said its to weed out the riffraff. It’s like the bible for salespeople. Training is set for Wed-Thurs when they tell the group of us the whole compensation, benefits package, etc. and of course, how to sell cars. Is that normal dealership practice or do you think that it’s a scam?

I’m a highly educated 47-yr old out of work for a yr. I’m outgoing and feel I could do it. I appreciate your feedback.
Thanks, Joli

Hi Meghan,

Sorry you are feeling that way, but I have said over and over that the first 90 days are the hardest not to mention the first couple of weeks. Things will get easier and easier, but you need to stick it out. It sounds like you would be a great fit if you can hold out. In a couple of months you won’t believe your were feeling this way.

Stick with it, you can do it.

I just started selling cars this week. Not only am I the only female in a major car lot with several locations, but I’m also the youngest. I considered myself thick skinned, but this is emotionally exhausting; I can never relax or be myself, I ALWAYS have my game face on and my guard up. I feel like it just may not be worth it. It is so competitive that it’s intimidating. How can I compete with men who have been doing this for 10-20 years. I am a 23 yr old girl. I’m good with clients, but I don’t want to spend 60 hrs a week battling men twice my age with ten times my experience who look down on me like I’m a young, dumb, blonde.

KB · January 1 at 7:20 am

Hi Diane,

Glad to hear from you and about your success. There definitely is a place for women in the car business as you have proven. I am working on a new book that is all about Prospecting, Referrals and Follow-Up that will provide tools and ideas for growing the car salesperson’s customer base.

Keep up the great work.

I have been in the car business since June 2011. I sold real estate in the past and with the economy my husband suggested I try my hand at selling cars. I absolutely love it. I work at a dealership that I put in 40 hours a week, sells over 500 cars a month and has about 40 sales people. November and now December I am the top gross profit earner for the store and am on track to earn six figures. I am the only female that works the floor and find people are surprised and pleased working with a women. But how can I find a followup system for car sales like I used in real estate? I am looking for postcards, etc. P.S. I have subscribed to your articles since my entry and have learned some of the greatest tools from you. Thanks so much for helping me be successful.

Hello Melissa,

More women are needed in the field and you have a great example.

Thanks for dropping a line and letting the world know that women can sell cars succesfully.

I have been in the business for a little while now, I have a degree in Business Management as well as Criminal Justice, I am the ONLY female car sales in our region and I pride myself on making every man and women feel comfortable while they are talking with me. I’m quite proud to say I can fill my own stilettos when it comes to the men in the profession. So to every other women in the business I think we can all agree that the guys need to watch out!

I have been in the car business for 6 years now and I have to say that I love it very much! I am nowhere near 6 figures but I live and work in a community of less than 60000 people. I do however do well most of the time. I have realized why the industry has mainly been men in the past. Long hours, no guaranteed income and you will have to prove yourself over and over and over again, the industry is not full of excitement over women entering the industry. I have found though that it is a fantastic career if you have the right circumstances and of course…… the drive! Just be sure your feelings don’t hurt easily and you will do fine! Good luck to all women out there!!!

Jen · September 14 at 5:09 pm

I started working in car sales at 18… I grew up with brothers so I had thick skin. Working in a male dominated industry is very tough… my first month I would have sold 18 cars but my manager kept giving away half my deals to some of the guys because he said I wasn’t able to close even though the guy came back with the same numbers I did. I probably should have gone to the General Manager and HR but I decided to pursue another opportunity. One in which I am now a software trainer for car dealerships… I never had a problem with people opening up to me, although I did find it frustrating that the guys did not want me to succeed. It was very very tough… so now I help them make more money… best of luck to the women out there and don’t give up!

It is a great business for women. Men are just not used to having women in the business and many are worried that you will do better than them.

Best of luck and keep me posted.

That’s great to hear. I’m actually looking to get into the car industry. I have a bachelors degree in Marketing, and feel I can apply everything that I’ve learned in my consumer behavior classes very well to this field. And having a skirt and a great personality is an add on bonus. No offense guys, but the girls are coming out to play in the big boy field! I’ll see you when I get there =)
