I sell Nissan since 2007. I came from 9 years in the financial services field where my earnings had dropped from $75K to $52K and the stress levels were getting more severe. In Santa Monica $50K is poverty income. I moved to phoenix (2007) and decided to learn auto business. I am going back to the financial services field in May 2010. Selling cars is easier but when the economy is good F/S is more lucrative and management is more respectful of front line salespeople. I guess you could say they’re “not so rough around the edges”.
I sell Cadillac, buick, and GMC and I have been in the business for 1 year. While traffic in the showroom is slow, another problem is low inventory levels. GM has some really great cars for 2010. We just need more of them. Nevertheless, I’m confident business will get better and a $100k income will be realistic again.
So far this year, I have qualified for GM Mark of Excellence bonus money!
I’m looking forward to a great career as a car salesman!
I sell Toyota’s. New dealership…Great management…It will be great there. Bought the book..and with your tips I will be making more. By the way I have been selling cars for 30 plus years.
Thanks David,
Glad to hear from a car sales veteran. 30 years in the car business is fantastic, I bet you have some great stories.
If you have any tips, photos or stories feel free to drop a line and I will include them on the blog.

Hey KB! I’m a newbie at 1st Honda. It’s a trifecta outfit, family run group who has Honda, Nissan & KIA. I just finished all my training and just got Honday Certified today. So of course it’s all a bit overwhelming at this point and I have a head full of doubts no less!
I remember though when I started selling Insurance, I felt the same way and then I turned out to be their top Insurance Sales professional for 2007, go figure!
So, I am trying to be patient, not be too critical of myself and just try to soak it all in right now.
I’ll be buying the book when collect that first commission check! I’m a mid-career professional and I want this to be my last professional job I EVER have to go get again!
Hi David,
Welcome to the car business.
You have some great lines to sell. A family owned group is usually an indication of well run dealerships where you have the potential to make some great money. Your insurance background will probably be a big help to get you up and running quickly.
Remember that they will tell you how to sell them a car if you listen closely and let them talk.
Drop me a line anytime with any questions or let me know how it is going.
I wish you the best

Hey KB,
I just started at a new car dealership ( Chevy, Buick ) 2 weeks ago and was just GM certified a week ago. Passed my state licence test last week and sold my first new car on Friday and delivered it on Saturday. I think my 25 years of customer service experience has helped a lot. I have an appointment tomorrow morning to sell a 2010 Chevy Colorado. All I can say is that if you are committed to the process, it works !
